Caroline Batten’s review points out the fact that the term “Anglo-Saxon” appearing here and there throughout the book is regarded by some people as controversial. I agree; the revised or second edition of the book will replace the phrase with “early English” wherever practicable–excepting publications like Anglo-Saxon England (annual volume), F.M. Stenton’s Anglo-Saxon England (book), etc., where the phrase cannot now be changed.
Errata Update Dec. 3, 2021
My students pointed out that Lesson 34.1, line 5, has a word, cynestol, “royal seat, throne,” that is not found in the Glossary. Also in 35.1, line 6, ofmyrðodon, “murdered,” a form of the weak verb of class II ofmyrðrian, does not appear in the Glossary. These omissions have been added to the current update of the “Comprehensive Errata & Corrigenda.”
A Review
Beginning
I’m beginning to populate the menu items on the side-bar with real data, beginning with an acknowledgment to the 751 students I’ve taught Old English since starting the project in 1993. Errata and Corrigenda are coming soon indicating the errors & typos I’ve found since the first printing of the book in early 2021. I welcome additions to this list; these may be sent through the messaging function on this page, or, instead, directly to me at: jdmevans@uga.edu. Many thanks.
Apologies
With sincere apologies to anyone who might have found their way to this site, let me say I am still mastering the techniques for uploading material — lots of it already amassed; some awaiting organization & refinement — so this site is still “under construction.” Please visit again later on, and my hope is you’ll find a full complement of the material promised in various corners of the book! Ultimately this will be where I will post corrections to errors I find or others find and send to me, as well as answering questions concerning aspects of the book as they may arise among users of the book.
Best wishes,
Jonathan Evans

This is the Humanities Commons page, or set of pages, connected with my textbook An Introduction to Old English (New York: MLA, 2021) ISBN 9781603293112. It will contain additional material that couldn’t fit into the book plus other addenda, errata, and corrigenda as needed.
